The Putter Stoomgemaal is the last restored scoop wheel pumping station in the Netherlands. Every Wednesday morning, volunteers at the Putter stoomgemaal work on maintaining the machine and visitors are then welcome to come and take a look.
On special running days, the pumping station is in operation, when the stokers and the driver are happy to explain the history and operation of the special steam engine. The old boiler and a photo exhibition about the steam pumping station can be found in the barn. Thus, the Putter Stoomgemaal was built in 1886 on the foundations of the demolished windmill and the pumping station operated until 1971. Five years later, the pumping station was added to the list of protected national monuments and in 2006 the restoration was completed, resulting in a pumping station that has been returned to almost its original and working state.
