Historical village walk

Whenever my friend and I visit a new place, we always enjoy exploring. We do that with a walking or cycling route and sometimes with a guide. Either way, it is always fun to discover the new location and often we end up in places we would never have seen without that route or guide.

This is one of the reasons I often recommend visitors to Putten to walk the Historic Village Walk. The 4km route, created by the Putten Historical Society, takes you back in time.

Start at the Tourist Information Centre
It’s been quite a while since I walked the route myself. The sun is shining today – the perfect moment to refresh my knowledge and delve into Putten’s history.
The route starts at the tourist information centre. As I walk the route, I notice things I’d normally just walk straight past. For instance, I now see the remarkable stained-glass windows of the Roman Catholic church, and the beautiful façades of a number of buildings in the town centre suddenly catch my eye.

The photos in the guide show what Putten looked like in days gone by. It’s nice to compare them with how things are today. I wonder what it will look like here in 100 years’ time.

Informative street names
The street names actually provide some information in themselves. For example, Papiermakerstraat exists because there used to be three paper mills in Putten. And did you know that Molenweg was also known as Poepesteegje? Would you like to know why? Then why not set off with the brochure in hand?

The route also takes me through the shopping streets, which I take the opportunity to explore and do a bit of shopping. Naturally, it’s then time for a cup of tea with a treat!

The route really comes highly recommended. Apart from tourists, Putten residents should definitely walk this route as well. For families with small children, there is also a fun children's route through the centre of Putten: 'A kiekje in Putten'.

An interesting fact: every new resident of Putten receives a voucher from the local council, which can be used to collect the ‘Historic Village Walk’ brochure from VVV Putten .
