Holidays in Putten
It is May holidays, the children are home from school for 2 weeks and I too have a few days off. No travel and holiday plans have been made so we are staying close to home, but what is there to do in Putten? Well... as a mother working at the VVV, there always seems to be something to do in Putten!
Let’s get out and about!
So on Friday morning, I set off with my youngest. Destination? The woods! Of course, I get a bit of grumbling at first: “Walking’s no fun, is it, Mum…?” Still, I manage to convince her and she soon puts on her coat.
So where do we go? To Landgoed Schovenhorst!
As soon as we arrive at the Estate, you immediately experience and feel nature, you can hear the birds singing and everything is already blooming and colouring fresh green at the end of April.
The Arboretum
We start at the Estate with a short walk in the Arboretum, which is one of the five tree gardens on the Estate. I tell my daughter why the estate is so special; The founder Mr J. H. Schober long ago (1848) had seeds of plants and trees from all over the world come here to see if they would also grow here in Putten. By now there are trees that are centuries old. "That old?" This impresses even a 9-year-old
We see a special bench, you see these in several places, plenty of opportunity to sit and enjoy the surroundings.
Building huts and having a romp
As we walk further along the estate, we soon come across a gate marked ‘Speelbos’ (Play Forest). How brilliant is that? Here, you can build huts, climb and scramble to your heart’s content. Even when the weather isn’t great, you can stay dry in one of the covered huts. So, after a short (mandatory) walk, this is a brilliant spot for children to let off steam for a while. Tired but satisfied from playing, we walk on a little further…
As we head back, we walk past the Bostoren, a climb of 235 steps, 40 metres high. We will keep this one for a while, but I promise my daughter that we will soon check out the spectacular view from the top here.
