October 1944 - The story of the Putten raid
On 1 October 1944, the Germans responded with a terrible retaliation to an attack by a resistance group. A raid was carried out in much of Putten and part of Nijkerk. On 2 October, the men were taken away by train to Camp Amersfoort and then taken to various concentration camps. Only dozens of men returned. The final number of victims of the raid comes to 552.
You can learn about Putten's war history by visiting the memorial room or by listening to the stories of the listening stones of the Liberation Route Europe.
Putten's wartime history does not only consist of the raid. More far-reaching events took place. The foundation stones also bring this part of Putten's history to life in a personal way.
